How to start an online business properly and successfully with 10 tips

At what stage does a project in online business start?

Let's first talk about the lifecycle of the project . No matter what methodology or process you have chosen, every project should start somewhere. Each project usually consists of five stages: Initiation, Planning, Implementation, Monitoring and Control . And the initiation phase is the first phase where the project is launched together with your team, all customers and stakeholders. All the information you have (e.g. from competitors, customers) is gathered to determine the scope, timing and cost of the project. This is the basic setting for starting an online business, where you can define your stakeholders, team, goals and deliverables.

How to start a project and what do I need in the launch phase.
A good way to focus on starting a project and really knowing what you need to define it for your project are three areas: People, Processes and Products. This is the heart of any online business in the startup phase.

Plan your team format

In the project launch phase, you need to select and prepare your team. First review your project and deliverables and decide what kind of team you need. And check the availability by booking your resource temporarily. And when you think about deciding who to book for a project, consider not only availability, but also the skills you need to successfully complete your project. Think about the client or stakeholders and review the following list as you build your team in the initial stages of the project:

  • Skills (what they can do)
  • Experience (how much time do they need to get the job done and with full quality)
  • Stakeholders (what are their requirements and market experience)
  • Availability (do they have time to manage the business online)
  • Budget (can you afford it).
And remember, you should never do this in isolation from them .Talk to your leads and make sure you are not making assumptions of your own. It is good to have a brief meeting with the leads, initiate the project and deliverables, and get their help in determining resource needs. Working through the above should give you the shape of a team for your project, but remember to leave some time for contingencies after planning before starting the project in case you need to look outside your organization for the right freelance skills .

Have an experienced team

Set up a meeting with a good agenda (always make sure the meeting is useful for the right people) and start with the background of the project and the goals, objectives and requirements already defined in advance. It makes sense to leave a space at the end of the meeting for a workshop-type forum to gather team ideas. Some good areas to discuss and address early on are:

  • How the team would like to work.
  • How and when the team should solicit customer or stakeholder feedback.
  • How the team wants to communicate with customer or stakeholder feedback.
  • What regular meetings the team should hold internally, when those meetings should take place.
As stated, involving the team in decision making up front will likely make them feel more invested in the project as a whole. This makes it more relevant to how the online business is already doing.

Engaging with stakeholders

Identify stakeholder engagement as part of project initiation . Whether it's a client or internal stakeholders, it's really important to be clear about who will be performing the tasks, signing off on the deliverables, or reviewing them.

And make sure you have your internal meeting beforehand. Don't put team members in a meeting about a project they know nothing about. And it's also good to have introduced yourself to the client or relevant stakeholders before the meeting, either by phone or ideally in person. And make sure you have a clear agenda and don't invite the whole world to the meeting. And always remember to keep a meeting inclusive and relevant.

Things to do at the meeting:

  • Introduction.
  • Roles and responsibilities.
  • Accomplishments.
  • Assumption.
  • Risk.
  • Dependence.
  • Timing.
  • Cost.
  • The shape of the team.

Risks in starting a project:

Thinking ahead is one of the best things you can do in the launch phase of a project. It is important to identify well the places of risks that can prevent the implementation of online business . Create a clear record for everyone to highlight risks, assumptions, issues and dependencies and figure out how to mitigate them. And make sure you involve your team.

Some basic challenges of starting a project and how to overcome them:
There are many challenges you can face when starting an online business . Below I have identified some of the major challenges you will face at the start of the project and how to overcome them.

The startup phase of the project is very slow:

Often at the beginning of the project to build an online business everyone takes a little more time than they should, everything is more relaxed and the processes to start a project can drag on for a very long time. I've seen this happen many times and it can really impact a project if you are struggling to meet promised deadlines. Here are some tips to make sure you are moving at the right pace:

  • Make phone calls or meetings to discuss and agree on things, as this can often help speed things along instead of getting lots of questions over and over via email.
  • Make sure the client and team know what their deliverables are for the startup phase of the online business and what dependencies depend on them. And highlight any obstacles right away.
Set the overall timing for this phase. It's often easy to get hung up before launch, so make sure you have a clear goal to work towards
Remember to encourage the team and the customer. So how can you involve people, motivate , make them understand that progress is being made as the launch of the project is the most important phase and try to find concrete things that you and the team can do to make the project more realistic.

Lack of clarity about the project:

Sometimes when the startup phase of the online business begins, things seem a bit vague and team members are confused about what the project actually is.  Be sure to look at the following to create alignment within your team:

  • Make sure you have a clear list of the client's requirements. And make sure you include the business, user, and technical requirements in that scope.
  • Execute those requirements with your team if you have a custom one. And if you don't, be sure to include everyone from the beginning.
  • Once the internal kickoffs are complete, keep the momentum going with the team - and make sure the team knows and is invested in what you have to offer. And always involve the team in creating the executive summary, identifying deliverables, and approaching the project.
  • Top ten tips to always keep in mind when starting a project: in online business.
  • Set the desired project progress parameters for your project before starting the online business.
  • Get your team's approval and participate early.
  • And the same goes for the customer - get them involved early and on an ongoing basis.
  • Make sure you establish clear communication with customers or stakeholders.
  • Make sure there is an agreed upon process for your project.
  • However, do not try to commit to a specific process if you are not successful in your project.
  • Try to meet your client in person at least once before you start the project (if this is not possible, make a video call!).
  • Set a clear agenda for everyone for each meeting.
  • Think about your future project by thinking about the risks and dependencies with your team.
Always think ahead - don't just focus on getting a project started!
